The Success and The Failures of Lefthanders in Sports

All-Time Best Lefthanded Women's Tennis Players

Angelique Kerber is a professional tennis player from Germany who turned pro in 2003.  By 2007 she had achieving a ranking of #67 on the WTA tour.  She remained in the top 100 for most of the next three years, and finished 2010 ranked #47 on the tour.  The 2011 season brought more steady improvement, and she reached the semifinals at the US Open and finished the year ranked #34.

Kerber reached the quarterfinals at the French Open and the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2012, and at the end of the year she was ranked #5.  She finished 2013 ranked #9, and 2014 ranked #10.  Kerber started slowly in 2015 and fell out down in the rankings for a while, but won 4 tournaments later in the year to make it back into the top 10.

Kerber had a breakthrough year in 2016, winning both the US Open and the Australian Open, and the silver medal for Germany in the Olympics.  She achieved the #1 ranking in Sept 2016 and held that spot until January 2017.  She was either #1 or #2 through July, but her game fell apart and she finished 2017 ranked #21st ranked player.

Early in 2018, Kerber regained her form and made the quarterfinals at the French Open, and the semifinals at the Australian Open.  After she defeated Serena Williams in the finals at Wimbledon for her 3rd career Grand Slam Singles Title, she moved up to #2 and ended the year in that spot.  Unfortunately she has faltered since then, and is currently ranked as #25 on the WTA Tour (as of April 2021.  With those three Grand Slam titles Kerber has more than any lefthander since Monica Seles, and at age 33 she still has time for a resurgence.
