The Success and The Failures of Lefthanders in Sports

Harman remains the current best and is still the highest rated lefthanded golfer on the PGA Tour.  But he does not stand alone, as fellow lefthanders Robert MacIntyre and Akshay Bhatia have joined him near the top.  Robert MacIntyre, earned his first PGA Tour win in June 2024 and then just six weeks later in July earned his second.  Akshay Bhatia earned his first PGA Tour win in July 2023 and got his second in April 2024.

Harman, Bhatia, and MacIntyre rank #16, #17, and #18 on the PGA list of leading money winners for the year.  Harman is curently #15 in the OWGR rankings, with MacIntyre #16 and Bhatia #27.

Congratulations to Brian Harman,

winner of the

2023 Open Championship.

Lefthanded Golfers on the LPGA Tour

Bonnie Bryant is still the only lefthanded golfer to ever win a LPGA Tour event,

and very few other ladies have ever succeeded in professional golf.

Brian Harman took the lead on the second day of the 2023 Open Championship and never wavered, finishing the weekend 13 under par and 6 strokes ahead of the field.  He became just the third lefthanded golfer (after Bob Charles and Phil Mickelson) to win the Open Championship and the fifth lefthanded golfer along with those two plus Mike Weir and Bubba Watson) to win any of golfs major championships.  His dominating performance earned him a new found place among the games top performers, moving him up to #10 on the OWGR.

Bob Charles, Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir and Bubba Watson will always be the best of the field,

and now Brian Harman seems ready to make it a party of five.

Why Aren't There More Lefthanded Golfers?

While most of the bias that prevented lefthanders from playing in the past has been alleviated,

there are still not as many lefthanders playing the game as one might expect.
