The Success and The Failures of Lefthanders in Sports

Lefthanded Golfers

Lefthanded Golfers on the LPGA Tour

Bonnie Bryant is still the only lefthanded golfer to ever win a LPGA Tour event,

and very few other ladies have ever succeeded in professional golf.

Bob Charles, Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir and Bubba Watson will always be the best of the field,

and now Brian Harman seems ready to make it a party of five.

Matt McCarty turned pro in 2021 and played three full years on the Korn Ferry tour with little success.  Then it all came together in the summer of 2024, when he won 3 tournaments over 6 weeks to earn his way to the PGA,  And it just his 3rd PGA start he won the Black Desert Championship on October 13, 2024 and became the seventeenth lefthanded golfer ever to win a PGA Tour event.

Why Aren't There More Lefthanded Golfers?

While most of the bias that prevented lefthanders from playing in the past has been alleviated,

there are still not as many lefthanders playing the game as one might expect.

McCarty joins recent PGA winners

Robert MacIntyre (two wins)

Akshay Bhatia (two wins)

Garrick Higgo (1 win)

Brian Harman (3 wins)

in a formidable group of

lefthanded golfers with a chance

to win every weekend

on the PGA tour.
