The Success and The Failures of Lefthanders in Sports
Bonnie Bryant is an American female professional golfer who became the first lefthanded golfer to win an LPGA tour event when she won the Bill Branch Classic in November 1974. To this date, she is still the only lefthanded golfer to win, or come close to winning, an LPGA event.
Bryant had been a softball player and did not start playing golf until the age of 20. She joined the LPGA tour eight years later (in 1971). Prior to her breakthrough win, her best showing had been a 5th place finish in 1973. Besides her victory in 1974, she finished tied for 10th in the LPGA Championship, and tied for 14th at the U.S. Women’s Open, and she finished 22nd on the money list for the year.
Bryant suffered from a series of injuries over the next few years and never came close to her 1974 performance. She did finish in a 5-way tie and lost in a playoff in a tournament in 1979, before succumbing to injury and retiring in 1983. She finished her career with $137,294 in prize money, which ranks #606 on the all-time LPGA money list.
